Division) called on SR Drive® technology to provide
the driving force for a new breed of pump.
Weir’s VSR range
of centrifugal pumps combine the existing Roto-Jet
pump design with an SR Drive® motor
and controller, creating a series of revolutionary
high pressure pump systems.
The
challenge for Weir was to bring to market a new system
that would afford higher levels of reliability, improved
efficiency and greater performance flexibility. Until now, a fixed-speed induction
motor together with a step-up gearbox had driven the
pump through a series of mechanical couplings. The
SR Drive® motor drives the
pump directly without a gearbox, thus eliminating five
bearings and two couplings from the overall drive-train. This
integrated approach removes the need for a closely machined
bed-plate and the associated mechanical alignment procedures.
The VSR pumps are less
than half the length of the equivalent standard pump
package and provide significant improvements in performance
and efficiency. In applications such as water

and rapid run-up and shut-off capability provide major
benefits. Precise variable speed control allows
the operator to fine-tune the operating point of the pump
to precisely match the process requirements.
