Blackpool
is one of the few UK towns that retains a tram (streetcar)
system. For its centenary
in 1985, feasibility studies were set up to evaluate new technology
which could replace the traditional DC motors and resistance
controllers. Switched Reluctance Drives Ltd was invited
to develop a set of four SR Drive® traction
systems for one of a small number of new vehicles, based on coach
chassis, which would be used as demonstrator vehicles. The
tram shown had four drives, each driving one axle and based on
totally-enclosed SR Drive® motors,
which were supplied from the 600V DC catenary. The
motors were mounted on the bogies and the GTO-based controllers
were mounted in a cubicle in the passenger compartment. The
drives had peak ratings of 300Nm, 30kW and 3000 rev/min.
After initial commissioning,
the tram was put into full revenue-earning passenger service
and performed very successfully, covering over 15,000 miles
before the study ended. It was particularly
favoured by the drivers, who appreciated the smoothness of control
and wide speed range of the drives.
